I hate being ill
It really bugs me that I cannot work.
On Thursday I heard a former colleague who does the same job as me wil be starting on a new job a week on Tuesday. Would I have been starting too if it wasn't for the fact that I am waiting for surgery?
I feel hurt not to have at least been asked or would I not have been asked if I was fit anyway.

You would have been asked! And soon, you'll be fit. Believe it.
If you're curious as to whether you'd have been asked or not, ask about it yourself! Find out! I'll bet that your hypothesis is correct, and it's simply the fact that you're having surgery that gave you the setback. Chin up, it'll be you next time.
Sometimes employers, bosses, managers whatever you want to call them, make a decision based on "availability"-whoever is going to be there to do the job, perhaps they may not be as qualified, however if they are just there at the right time and when the need arises, the job wil go to that person, you being ill or scheduled for surgery had to do with it--Maybe--
What you need to do once you get back, is to let them know that you are ready, willing and able..
